How to Grow Berries in Greenhouses
You really can grow berries in greenhouses year round!
Greenhouses are wonderful because they give you the ability to grow berries year round no matter where in the world you live! To grow scrumptious berries all the time, you just have to learn a little about greenhouses and how they work and you’ll be well on your way.
Berry Jerry’s tips on growing berries in greenhouses…
You can grow berries in greenhouses year round because greenhouses enable you to control the temperature and climate inside the greenhouse to mimic the natural growing conditions for berries.
To grow berries in greenhouses you can either purchase a commercial greenhouse or build your own. When looking at greenhouses for growing your berries you need to consider the type of berries you will be growing and the number of plants you intend to have to ensure that the greenhouse you choose is the right size.
If you are planting strawberries, raspberries or blackberries in greenhouses you will need to space the plants at least two feet apart. Blueberries need about five feet of space between plants. Of course you’ll need enough room to walk between the rows of berries. I recommend at least six feet between rows of berries in greenhouses.
In general you need a water source for greenhouses but you don’t necessarily have to have electricity to your greenhouse unless the climate demands it. In cold climates that don’t have adequate sun plant lights and heaters may be needed in greenhouses to more closely resemble the berry’s natural growing conditions.
If at all possible it is best to place greenhouses where they get sun the majority of the day. Even if the climate is not warm the sun will warm the greenhouse and berries need sunlight for at least six to eight hours a day to thrive.
