Making Money With Your Berries

Can The Berries You Grow Make You Money?

It's already June and berries are in bloom -- can you believe it? Time sure does fly. But what are you going to do with all of the berries your garden produces this year? If you have enough of them, you might just be able to make some extra cash.

Everyone Loves the Market

If there's one thing I look forward to every summer, it's the farmer's markets in my area. Every Tuesday and Thursday by the lake front there are numerous farmers who put their fruits and veggies on display. However, you don't have to be a full-time farmer to profit from your area farmer's markets.

Enough to Set Up Shop?

If you have a large berry garden you may actually be able to produce enough berries to warrant your own stand for a day or two at the farmer's market. Remember, you might have to pay for your space. Usually the rates range from $5 to $15 per day.

If you do decide to set up your own stand, make sure you comply with any licensing requirements your area may have. Some areas require that you have a license to sell produce or food.

Not Enough Berries For a Stand?

If you don't have enough berries to warrant your own farmer's market stand, see if someone there will be willing to sell your berries on consignment for you. If a farmer runs out of berries or doesn't offer berries at all, he or she might be willing to work out a deal. Just remember, farmers can be picky and your berries better be up to par.

Pride and Accomplishment

Even if you just earn an extra $20 or $50 from your berry growing, it's worth it. While selling a few berries at the farmers market won't make you rich, it will give you a sense of well-deserved pride and accomplishment that usually only the best berry growers get to experience.
