Ready For Fall-Bearing Berry Bushes?

Reap The Fall Berry Harvest

Many berry growers think that berry season winds down in the fall, but that doesn't have to be the case if you plan ahead and plant fall-bearing berry bushes. After all, those of us who love berries year round don't want the fun to end when summer fades away. If you want to extend your berry growing season, think about adding some of these fall varieties to your berry mix.

Heritage Raspberries

Heritage raspberries are very popular among fall berry growers. With its large, bright, sweet berries, it's no wonder they're so popular. This particular raspberry variety produces two berry crops during the year. The first one is in July. The second crop, which tends to be quite a bit larger than the July crop, begins in September and doesn't end until the first hard freeze.

Caroline

The Caroline raspberry plant is a newer fall-bearing variety. This particular berry plant produces very sweet raspberries that ripen earlier than the raspberries produced by the Heritage variety. One thing that many berry growers like about this new berry variety is that the plant is very disease resistant, making it one of the easier raspberry plants to care for.

Strawberries

If you want to pick strawberries in the fall, you need to plan ahead. Strawberries won't produce fruit during the first year, however, if you plant your berries in the fall, the strawberry plants will begin developing strong roots which will, in turn, lead to a better crop next spring. With proper care, you can make that crop last through the fall.

Remember, berry growing isn't just a once-a-year opportunity. If you're like me, you'll want to enjoy fresh berries throughout the year. When you're serious about growing berries year round, fall is the perfect time to expand your berry garden.
