Tomatoes are Berries Too

It's Not Too Late to Grow Tomatoes

If you haven't yet started a berry garden, it's not too late to begin growing this year. Many of us forget that tomatoes are berries too, and believe it or not, it's not too late in the year to establish a healthy tomato garden. Here are some tips that will help.

Forget the Seeds

If you're one of those people who love to start your berry plants from nothing but a seed, you're a little to late in the year to begin planting. However, if you just allow yourself to be a bit flexible, you can definitely grow tomatoes this year by getting a few already-established plants.

Even though summer is well under way, your local garden center should have some hardy tomato plants for sale. If, for some reason, you can't find any established tomato plants in your area then you can always buy from one of the many online nurseries.

If Seeds Are a Must

If you just can't fathom growing your tomatoes from anything but a seed, then you'll be happy to know that there are many tomato plants that mature very quickly and it's possible in milder climates to plant seeds right through the months of August and September. Just make sure you order seeds for tomatoes that mature quickly (some mature in less than 50 days) and that you provide the proper environment for the seed to flourish.

To Transplant or Not To Transplant

When you buy established tomato plants, you'll need to decide whether you'll be growing your tomatoes indoors or out. If you'll be growing the outdoors, you'll need to transplant them from their planters into your garden. Make sure you take just as much care with transplanting your tomatoes as you would any other berry, as they can be just as sensitive.

If you plan on growing your tomatoes indoors, you'll need to use proper indoor planters. Big planting pots are great and there are many planters available on the market designed specifically for growing tomatoes indoors.
